Transport and communications statistics for the 3rd quarter of 2018

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that as at the end of September 2018, total number of licensed motor vehicles dropped by 1.2% year-on-year to 238,792, of which light motorcycles (26,626) decreased by 11.2% whereas heavy motorcycles (96,935) rose by 1.0%. New registration of motor vehicles in the third quarter fell by 25.8% year-on-year to 3,392. Meanwhile, new registration of motor vehicles in the first three quarters of 2018 went down by 8.0% year-on-year to 10,887, with heavy motorcycles (5,635) dropping by 20.9%.




Announcement of the selected proposal for the “Macao-China Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition”

The selected proposal for the “Macao-China Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition”, organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), was announced. The exhibition proposal “The Manifesting Shadow” by Lam Sio Man and Heidi Lau was selected to represent Macao to participate in the Biennale to be held in May 2019 in Venice, Italy. The exhibition aims to deconstruct the current simplified “image” of Macao and reveal its intricate cultural identity, hence “manifesting” the “invisible” Macao.


Registration is open for “International Youth Dance Festival 2019” organised by the DSEJ

The International Youth Dance Festival organised by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ),first held in 1987, has provided a platform for young dance lovers from around the world to cultivate friendship, exchange cultures and perform diverse dances. It also provides an opportunity for local residents and tourists in Macao to appreciate and experience the art and culture of different countries and regions from a different perspective.


MSAR Government participates in the first China International Import Expo

Several departments of the MSAR Government will form delegations to participate in and attend the first China International Import Expo (CIIE), held in Shanghai from 5 to 10 November 2018.


Grace period for the Exchange of the Dog and Pig Zodiac Banknotes

As scheduled, the exchange period of the Dog and Pig Zodiac Banknotes will end on 9 November 2018 (Friday). For the convenience of the public, a grace period has been set up this year from 12 November (Monday) to 16 November (Friday) 2018 and registrants who have not yet conducted the note exchange are advised to exchange for their subscribed notes during business hours at their previously selected location during this grace period.


Registration for handicrafts workshops at the “Tap Siac Craft Market” is open

Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the “Tap Siac Craft Market” will be held from 16to 18 November and from 23 to 25 November, at Tap Siac Square, featuring thirty-eight handicrafts workshops. The fee for each handicrafts workshop is MOP50. All interested parties can register for the workshops through the “Activity Registration System” on IC’s website. Deadline for registration is 8 November, at 5pm.


UM mourns honorary doctor and renowned novelist Louis Cha

Dr Louis Cha, the late honorary doctor of letters of the University of Macau (UM), who was also a renowned Wuxia novelist better known by his pen name Jin Yong, passed away in Hong Kong at the age of 94. UM would like to offer the deepest condolences on the passing of Dr Cha and has sent a condolence letter to his family.


Results of wholesale and retail survey 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that a total of 15,062 wholesale & retail establishments, market stalls and fixed stalls on the street were operating in 2017, an increase of 596 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged rose by 2.7% to 69,684, with employees accounting for 83.5% of the total. Receipts of Wholesale & Retail Trade amounted to MOP 122.07 billion in 2017, up by 10.7% year-on-year. Expenditure grew by 8.6% to MOP 108.93 billion, of which Operating Expenses, Compensation of Employees and Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid recorded respective increases of 10.2%, 9.7% and 8.1%. Gross Surplus totalled MOP 11.75 billion, up by 24.0% year-on-year. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy went up by 16.8% to MOP 22.17 billion. Meanwhile, Gross Fixed Capital Formation fell by 24.5% year-on-year to MOP 1.94 billion, owing to a decrease in major refurbishments of retail establishments.
