Macao SAR Ranks Ninth Freest Economy in the Asia-Pacific Region

The Heritage Foundation released today its 2019 Report on the Index of Economic Freedom, rating Macao’s economy as “mostly free” for the eleventh consecutive year. The SAR’s overall score of economic freedom is 71.0, higher than 70.9 recorded in 2018 and well above the world and regional averages, making its economy the 34th freest among 180 economies. In the Asia-Pacific region, Macao is ranked 9th out of 43 economies, just behind Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Chinese Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.


Consumer Council released price survey on 11 festive foods

Consumer Council collected prices of 11 festive foods, including sweets and biscuits, from 24 retail outlets on 25 January for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12th June. The collected data has been uploaded to the Council’s website (www.consumer.gov.mo) and the ‘Supermarket Price Information Platform’ iPhone and Android apps. Consumers can also check the data through the Council’s official WeChat account.





Consumer Council conducted survey on credit card reward points and mileage redemption programmes

A lot of card issuing companies now offer consumers to use their credit card reward points to transfer to air mileage, consumers are facing numerous credit card advertisements but are clueless about which one offers the best rebate. The Consumer Council surveyed 8 card issuing companies in Macau for the application requirements, foreign transaction fees, terms and methods of transferring reward points to air mileage, etc. of 29 credit cards, details of the survey can be found in the latest issue 305 Consumer Report.


Government closely monitoring influenza situation

The Government has concluded – after careful assessment – that there is currently no need for a city-wide suspension of classes at local schools and kindergartens as a route to controlling seasonal influenza (flu).


Arrangement for banknotes exchange before the Lunar New Year

As Lunar New Year is approaching, the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) has coordinated with the two Issuing Banks for the provision of new and good-as-new banknotes in various denominations for public exchange starting from January 29 (Tuesday), in order to meet the demand for notes for use as red packets.
