Transport and communications statistics for April 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 239,663 as at end-April 2020, a slight increase of 0.6% year-on-year. Light automobiles (109,392) and heavy motorcycles (99,751) rose by 1.4% and 1.9% respectively, whereas light motorcycles (23,156) dropped by 7.5%. New registration of motor vehicles in April reduced by 5.4% year-on-year to 857, with that of light automobiles (287) falling by 25.5% whereas heavy motorcycles (556) rising by 15.6%. In the first four months of 2020, new registration of motor vehicles decreased by 20.4% year-on-year to 3,183. Number of traffic accidents in April totalled 613, with 208 injuries. In the first four months, there were 2,702 traffic accidents, involving 942 victims and 3 of them were killed.


Gross domestic product for the 1st quarter of 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) dropped by 48.7% year-on-year in real terms in the first quarter of 2020. The epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia has significantly dampened global economic activity. Although no widespread transmission of the virus was observed within the city, the economy of Macao, which was mainly driven by exports of services, was severely hit amid the epidemic, with a substantial decline in total demand. In terms of external demand, exports of services dropped by 60.0% year-on-year, with exports of gaming services and other tourism services falling by 61.5% and 63.9% respectively; moreover, exports of goods saw a decrease of 23.5%. Domestic demand slid further by 17.5% year-on-year, dragged down by the reduction in investment in fixed assets and private consumption expenditure. On the other hand, government final consumption expenditure rose by 5.0%. Imports of goods and services went down by 30.8% and 30.3% respectively.


MICE statistics for the 1st quarter of 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that number of MICE events held in the first quarter of 2020 declined by 69.8% (-263) year-on-year to 114, including 109 meetings & conferences, 3 exhibitions and 2 incentives. The decrease in MICE events was attributable to the postponement or cancellation of events due to the epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia. Besides, number of participants and attendees reduced by 75.9% to 80,000.



UM scholar’s study documents Chinese researchers’ efforts to improve Chinese language teaching and learning

Gong Yang, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education of the University of Macau (UM), has published an article on Chinese language teaching and learning worldwide in Language Teaching. As the first review article on Chinse language education published in this journal, it has been cited many times since it was published online in January this year.


Results of survey on manpower needs and wages for the 1st quarter 2020

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released results of the Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the first quarter of 2020. Survey coverage for this quarter comprises Manufacturing; Hotels; Restaurants; Electricity, Gas & Water Supply; Insurance; Activities Auxiliary to Financial Intermediation (formerly referred to as Financial Intermediation Activities); Child-care and Elderly Care, and the coverage has been extended to Other Financial Intermediation except Banking. This survey excludes the self-employed, as well as insurance agents and brokers not directly employed by insurance companies.


Employment survey for February-April 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that owing to the epidemic of novel coronavirus pneumonia, the general unemployment rate for February-April 2020 increased by 0.1 percentage point to 2.2% from the previous period (January-March 2020), and the unemployment rate of local residents rose by 0.2 percentage points to 3.1%. The underemployment rate grew by 1.3 percentage points to 2.1%.


Macao Orchestra and Macao Chinese Orchestra cancel concerts scheduled for June

Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, many performers will not be able to visit Macao. The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) has decided to cancel the concerts “Music at World Heritage: Romantic Orchestral Music” and “Music at World Heritage: Beethoven Symphony No. 1” by the Macao Orchestra on 5 June and 26 June respectively; and the family musical theatre “Music Adventure III” and “Chinese Musical Milestones – Wang Fujian and Macao Chinese Orchestra” by the Macao Chinese Orchestra on 6 June and 21 June respectively.

UM members’ paper on celebrity endorsement published in Journal of Advertising

Liu Yongdan, a PhD student in the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) at the University of Macau (UM), and Prof Matthew Liu Ting Chi, a professor in the faculty, co-published a paper titled ‘Big Star Undercover: The Reinforcing Effect of Attenuated Celebrity Endorsers Faces on Consumers Brand Memory’ in the latest issue of the Journal of Advertising, one of the top journals in the field of communication marketing.
