Macao Orchestra inaugurates its 2018-19 Concert Season

The Macao Orchestra (OM, from the Portuguese acronym), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, held the opening ceremony of its 2018-19 Concert Season on 1 September, at the lobby of the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium, followed by the season opening concert “Sergei Rachmaninoff by Barry Douglas”. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Acting Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Wang Dong; the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Mok Ian Ian; the Assistant of the Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Shao Bin; the Chairman of the China Symphony Development Foundation, Chen Guangxian; members of Macao Orchestra Advisory Committee, Dai Ding Cheng, Kevin Thompson, Johnny M Poon and Cao Yiji; the Head of the Department of Performing Arts Development of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Iu Wai Man; the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra, Lu Jia, and the General Manager of the Macao Orchestra, Rebecca Chou.





UM mourns the passing of honorary doctor, Nobel laurate James Mirrlees

Professor Sir James Mirrlees, a former recipient of the title of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa and Honorary Professor from the University of Macau (UM), who was also a Nobel laureate in economics, passed away in Cambridge, United Kingdom, at the age of 82. UM would like to offer the deepest condolences on the passing of Prof Mirrlees and has sent a condolence letter to his family. UM members will forever remember him.


External merchandise trade statistics for July 2018

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for July 2018 amounted to MOP918 million, down by 17.6% year-on-year; value of re-exports (MOP791 million) decreased by 17.4%, with that of Garments falling by 77.8%; moreover, value of domestic exports (MOP127 million) slid by 18.7%, with that of Tobacco decreasing by 38.4%. Total merchandise import rose by 23.6% year-on-year to MOP7.54 billion, of which imports of Mobile phones, Watches and Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products expanded by 59.9%, 56.3% and 41.7% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in July amounted to MOP6.63 billion.



PLPEX Prioritises Recruitment of People Bilingual in Chinese and Portuguese Registered on Portal

The “2018 Portuguese Speaking Countries Products and Services Exhibition (Macao)” (2018 PLPEX) will prioritise the recruitment of translators and receptionists of those bilingual in Chinese and Portuguese registered on the “Economic and Trade Co-operation and Human Resources Portal between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries” (“the Portal”). They will be directly involved in promoting the development of a platform for Mainland China and Portuguese-speaking Countries in both online and offline connections.


Call for proposals of creative handicraft workshops and stage performances for the “Tap Siac Craft Market” from tomorrow (31 August)

Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the “Tap Siac Craft Market” will be held from 16 to 18 November and from 23 to 25 November 2018, at Tap Siac Square. The call for proposals of “creative handicraft workshops” and “stage performances” is open from tomorrow (31 August) until 21 September, at 5:30pm.


Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for July 2018

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that, attributable to the summer holiday, visitors on package tours increased by 14.0% month-to-month to 771,000, yet down by 3.3% year-on-year. Package tour visitors from Mainland China (611,000) went down by 7.5% year-on-year, while those from the Republic of Korea (49,000) and Taiwan (63,000) surged by 30.6% and 59.4% respectively. In the first seven months of 2018, visitors on package tours totalled 5,040,000, up by 10.7% year-on-year.
