Consumer Council released latest ‘Supermarket price survey’ in Taipa and Coloane area

Consumer Council conducted its latest ‘Supermarket price survey’ on 24 May for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Surveyed locations included 12 supermarkets in Taipa and Coloane area.


UM Department of Portuguese produces first PhD thesis on literary translation

Zhang Jianbo, a PhD student from the Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), recently completed an oral defense for his thesis titled ‘Translation of Jorge Amado’s Works in China: A Study about the Relation between Translation and Power’, becoming the Portuguese department’s first PhD graduate in literary translation.





Cultural Affairs Bureau hosts various activities to celebrate “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day”

In response to the “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day” on 9 June 2018 (Saturday), the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) is going to hold a series of exciting activities, including the highlighted programme “Macao’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Carnival” to be held at the Mandarin’s House and Lilau Square for two consecutive days. The Carnival also features a variety of activities, such as concerts, exhibitions, talks, courses, as well as free visits to the Guia Lighthouse, the Chinese Ancient and Rare Books Chamber at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library and the Macao Museum, thus raising the public awareness of Macao’s cultural heritage comprehensively.


Consumer Report 297 features report on Chinese barbecued meats and braised meats MOU signed by consumer organizations within Greater Bay Area

Siu mei (Chinese barbecued meats) and braised meats are processed pork and poultry food products stored at room temperature, and sold to consumers in pieces cut manually. All the above circumstances mentioned are prone to the growth of bacteria, to safeguard consumers’ health, the Consumer Council and Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) tested 30 samples of these food products and found no pathogenic bacteria nor nonfood colourants. Moreover, the test result shows that char siu (barbecued pork) contains the highest level of sodium.


Results of retail sales survey for 1st quarter of 2018

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that, benefiting from the sales boom in the Lunar New Year, value of retail sales for the first quarter of 2018 increased by 25.7% year-on-year to MOP20.74 billion. As compared with the revised figure (MOP19.08 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2017, value of retail sales rose by 8.7%. In the first quarter, Watches, Clocks & Jewellery accounted for 21.1% of the total retail sales, followed by Goods in Department Stores (16.0%), Adults' Clothing (14.1%), Leather Goods (12.9%) and Goods in Supermarkets (5.7%).


Health statistics 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 5 hospitals in Macao in 2017, providing a total of 1,596 in-patient beds, up by 5 year-on-year. Number of in-patients rose by 1.8% year-on-year to 59,000, with an average hospital stay of 7.0 days, down by 0.1 day. Owing to a decrease in the average hospital stay of in-patients and an increase in the number of in-patient beds, the occupancy rate of in-patient beds dropped by 1.2 percentage points to 70.8%, representing the second consecutive year of decline.


Government proposes to use former Pearl Horizon plot for interim housing

The Government has proposed to use former Pearl Horizon plot to provide interim housing primary for those affected by the redevelopment of the city’s old districts under the existing urban renewal plan.
