Macao SAR Ranks Ninth Freest Economy in the Asia-Pacific Region

The Heritage Foundation released today its 2018 Report on the Index of Economic Freedom, rating Macao’s economy as “mostly free” for the tenth consecutive year. The SAR’s overall score of economic freedom is 70.9, higher than 70.7 recorded in 2017 and well above the world and regional averages, making its economy the 34th freest among 180 economies. In the Asia-Pacific region, Macao is ranked 9th out of 43 economies, just behind Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Chinese Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.


17th Macao City Fringe Festival was concluded successfully

The 17th Macao City Fringe Festival, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was concluded successfully on 21 January. This rich art feast featuring a total of 23 wonderful programmes and 10 extended activities during ten consecutive days earned an enthusiastic support and participation from the public. This edition of the Macao City Fringe Festival, themed “Treasure Hunting”, featured artists from all over the world who led the audience to uncover the city’s treasures that have likely been forgotten but are definitely worth embracing, such as landscapes, objects, people and stories, through an unconventional approach.


Residential property price index for the 4th quarter of 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the overall residential property price index in the fourth quarter of 2017 grew by 0.7% quarter-to-quarter to 258.0, which marked the seventh consecutive quarter of growth, and yet represented a slowdown from the 1.3% increase in the third quarter of 2017. The index for the Macao Peninsula (260.0) rose by 1.1%, while that for Taipa & Coloane (248.7) dropped by 1.6%.


Consumer Council released latest ‘Supermarket price survey’ Surveyed spots included 13 supermarkets in N. Sra. de Fátima Parish

Consumer Council conducted its first ‘Supermarket price survey’ on 1 February for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Surveyed locations included supermarkets near Areia Preta, Mong Há and Avenida de Venceslau de Morais in N. Sra. de Fátima Parish.


IC presents series of activities celebrating the Lunar New Year of the Dog

In order to welcome the Chinese New Year and celebrate this occasion with the public, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) organizes the “Let’s Celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Dog” which include a series of workshops, performances, activities and exhibitions, among others.


Macao participates in Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation

The Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation (Ministerial Conference) which was jointly hosted by the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Civil Aviation Administration of China was convened in Beijing from 31 January to 01 February 2018. The delegations eventually signed the Beijing Declaration to agree on maintaining aviation safety and enhancing air navigation services.



Wages of construction workers and prices of construction materials for the 4th quarter of 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the average daily wage of construction workers decreased further by 4.1% quarter-to-quarter to MOP798 in the fourth quarter of 2017, due to a weakened demand for construction workers following the completion of several large-scale entertainment facilities and residential projects. The average daily wages of local (MOP1,017) and non-resident construction workers (MOP675) fell by 3.3% and 5.6% respectively quarter-to-quarter.
