External merchandise trade Statistics for December 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for December 2017 amounted to MOP905 million, up by 20.1% year-on-year; value of re-exports (MOP746 million) increased by 24.9%, with that of Diamond & diamond jewellery rising by 138.0%; meanwhile, value of domestic exports (MOP159 million) rose by 1.8%. Total merchandise import grew by 17.2% year-on-year to MOP7.95 billion, of which imports of Mobile phones, Motor cars & motorcycles and Construction materials expanded by 137.0%, 32.3% and 31.6% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in December amounted to MOP7.04 billion.


Revision made on Regulations of Consumer Arbitration Centre Cross-border arbitration and judgement to boost tourists’ confidence

A dispatch by the Secretary for Economy and Finance was published in Series II of the Official Gazette no. 5 on 31 January 2018, rectifying the revision of section 2, article 11 of the “Regulations of Consumer Arbitration Centre” to adopt the use of long-distance transmission technology, such as video conference, to facilitate cross-border mediation and hearing. The Consumer Council states that the aim of revising the Regulations is to safeguard the right to claim of tourists returning to their own places of origin, to improve the efficiency of the Consumer Arbitration Centre, and to enhance consumers’ confidence to shop in Macao. The Council has proposed to consumer organizations in the Greater Bay Area to set up a mechanism for cross-border arbitration.


“Macao・Creative City of Gastronomy” work meeting held today

The “Macao・Creative City of Gastronomy” work meeting was held today (30 January), attended by representatives of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and other governmental departments concerned, academic institutes, industry organizations and so forth. During the meeting, the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, Alexis Tam, proposed six requirements and work directions towards the dedication to build Macao into a genuine Creative City of Gastronomy, through fostering synergies between gastronomy and creative industries, training and preservation, among other endeavors.


CE affirms contribution of local Macanese community

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today spoke highly of the local Macanese community’s contribution to the development of Macao, saying the community’s culture was one of the elements that made Macao a world centre of tourism and leisure.


IPIM Organized Workshop and Seminar to Enhance the Level of Local Convention and Exhibition Industry

This morning (Jan. 30), the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) organized a “Macao MICE Industry Workshop - Best Practice in Site Inspections and Developing Products for the MICE Industry”. In the afternoon, a “Seminar with Public Security Police Force of Macao (CPSP) – Information Session for Convention and Exhibition Industry” was held in collaboration with the CPSP. Both events took place at the Multifunction Conference Room of Macao Business Support Centre (or MBSC, managed by IPIM), located at the 19th Floor of China Civil Plaza Building, Alameda Dr. Carlos d´Assumpção, and attracted over 50 representatives of the hotel industry, convention and exhibition centres, professional event organizers and destination management companies. According to the participants, the two events were very practical and helped to enhance the professional level of the MICE industry.


UM professor appointed editor-in-chief of Asian Journal of Social Psychology

Allan B I Bernardo, a professor from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau (UM), has been appointed editor-in-chief of the Asian Journal of Social Psychology, effective from 1 January 2018.





Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre will reopen to the public from 31st January 2018

The Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre, an affiliated gallery of the Macao Museum of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, suffered extensive damage, both indoors and outdoors, caused by typhoon Hato last year. In order to ensure the public’s safety and ensure the provision of quality services, a comprehensive assessment of the building and a series of repair works were carried out. Upon conclusion of these works, the Centre will reopen to the public from 31st January 2018.
