17th Macao City Fringe Festival kicks off on Friday and takes the public on a search for the city’s treasures

The 17th Macao City Fringe Festival, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, will take place from 12 to 21 January 2018, with the opening ceremony to be held on 12 January, at 3pm, at the Old Court Building. On the day of the opening ceremony, three excellent performances take to the stage, namely Niyaro: Yearning for Homeland, Jin-Tang and Always in My Heart, inviting the audience to uncover treasures of daily life. The public is advised to purchase their tickets as soon as possible as tickets for some of the programmes are limited.



Yonghua Song assumes office as UM rector

Prof Yonghua Song, a world-renowned scholar in electrical engineering, today (9 January) assumed office as the rector of the University of Macau (UM). He expressed his hope to familiarise himself with the new job as soon as possible, increase interactions with the local community, and carry out more innovations.


UM professor appointed editor of English Today by Cambridge University Press

Andrew Moody, an associate professor from the University of Macau (UM) Department of English, has been appointed by Cambridge University Press as the editor of the journal English Today for a five-year term with effect from 1 January 2018. Prof Moody will lead the international editorial team of the journal.


Officials explain details of cybersecurity bill to public

The Government-proposed cybersecurity bill aims to specify responsibilities of public departments and particular entities in order to maintain the security of the city’s “critical infrastructure” relating to information technology.


DSI launches official WeChat account

The Identification Services Bureau (hereinafter referred to as DSI) officially launches its official WeChat account on 8 January 2018. It will offer greater convenience to citizens in obtaining DSI’s information. Through mobile devices like smart phone, citizens can now read the latest news published by DSI anytime and anywhere easily.


IFT holds Open Day on 7 Jan

On 7 January, the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) held the Open Day at IFT Mong-Há Campus. Through various activities, visitors were able to get to know more about the Institute’s teaching philosophy, learning facilities and environment. The general public was welcome to attend the Open Day, and high school students who were interested in joining IFT, do not miss the chance!


MPI Open Day Received Overwhelming Participation

On 6 January, the Macao Polytechnic Institute successfully held the "2018 MPI Open Day", introducing its teaching facilities, programs and curricula, and research achievements to prospective graduates of high schools and other social elites by showcasing the latest developments to all sectors of the local community. The Open Day featured such activities as guided tours of the campus, exhibitions of teaching and research achievements, trial tests of physical fitness, athletic performance and interactions, art workshops, nursing operations, experiment demonstrations, talent shows, library tours, hands-on tryouts of teaching equipment, tasting meals at canteens and playing prize-winning games. The Open Day successfully attracted nearly 2,000 prospective high school graduates and other citizens, who participated enthusiastically in the event.



UM English Debating Team ranks among top 8 at World Universities Debating Championship

The University of Macau (UM) English Debating team recently entered the top eight in the English as a second language (ESL) category of the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) 2018, after beating its counterparts from various universities, including the University of Oxford and Tsinghua University. The UM team was the best performing team from China in this year’s competition.
