Portugal’s University of Coimbra Representatives Visited MPI

In order to strengthen the connections with Portuguese institutions of higher education and implement the mechanism of academic exchange by way of mutual visits, the School of Public Administration and the Student Affairs Office on behalf of Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI” or the “Institute”) recently received a group of representatives from the University of Coimbra (the “University”) in Portugal and held a fruitful discussion with the visiting professors and students. Led by Professor António José Mendes, who oversees the University’s foreign exchange programmes, the group comprised a sports coach and students of various academic disciplines. As soon as they arrived in Macao, a week-long schedule of academic and cultural exchange intermingled with sports training sessions began. The purpose of their visit was to facilitate the mutual communication and deepen the bilateral relationship in the hope of exploring greater avenues for cooperation.


International banking statistics – September 2017

According to the statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the proportion of international business in the local banking sector rebounded slightly in the third quarter of 2017. At end-September 2017, the share of international assets in total banking assets increased to 84.6% from 84.4% at end-June 2017, while the share of international liabilities in total banking liabilities rose to 79.2% from 79.0%.





Business climate survey on restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade for September 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the business performance of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments and retailers in September 2017 was better than expected with improved business conditions. The proportions of restaurants & similar establishments and retailers reporting a year-on-year growth in receipts were higher than those in August, and they were optimistic about their business prospects in October. Among the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments, 45% registered a year-on-year rise in receipts in September, up by 12 percentage points from August. The corresponding shares of Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (39%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (56%) rose by 20 and 13 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, the proportion of establishments recording a year-on-year decline in receipts went down by 9 percentage points over August to 37%. The corresponding shares of Japanese & Korean Restaurants (25%) and Local Style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops (39%) dropped by 25 and 14 percentage points respectively, while the proportion of Chinese Restaurants (30%) grew by 5 percentage points.
