External merchandise trade statistics for January 2019
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for January 2019 amounted to MOP1.53 billion, up by 24.6% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP1.39 billion) increased by 28.3%, with that of Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products and Diamond & diamond jewellery surging by 274.5% and 175.0%. However, value of domestic exports (MOP140 million) dropped by 3.4%, with that of Tobacco falling by 24.1%. Total merchandise import rose by 7.2% year-on-year to MOP8.97 billion, of which imports of Motor cars & motorcycles and Garments & footwear expanded by 72.2% and 57.5% respectively, but that of Construction materials and Mobile phones fell by 45.5% and 32.8% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in January amounted to MOP7.44 billion.

UM-CAT helps enhance translation efficiency
The University of Macau (UM) today (28 February) held a ceremony for the signing of a collaborative framework agreement with the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS-IA), and a joint academic workshop. UM-CAT, the latest machine translation system developed by UM researchers, was presented following the agreement signing ceremony. Using state-of-the-art technologies, this translation system can effectively assist professional translators and their team members in the translation, proofreading and management of translation projects that involve three languages, namely Chinese, English, and Portuguese, thereby enhancing translation efficiency. This system represents a major breakthrough achieved by UM researchers in integrating artificial intelligence technology in the development of machine translation systems. It attracted much interest and attention from conference participants, including professional translators.

UM, Chinese Academy of Science initiate innovative collaborative research in AI
The University of Macau (UM) today (28 February) held a ceremony for the signing of a collaborative framework agreement with the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS-IA), and a joint academic workshop. The agreement aims to maximise the research capacity of both UM and the CAS-IA in artificial intelligence (AI) and brain-inspired intelligence, promote their research development in related scientific fields, integrate their academic strengths and resources, as well as initiate innovative collaborative research in AI and brain-inspired intelligence.

Public consultation on items to be inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage starts on 13 March
In order to strengthen the safeguard of Macao’s intangible cultural heritage, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) has drawn up the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in accordance with Article 79 of the Cultural Heritage Protection Law and will launch a 30-day public consultation on the items recommended for inscription, thereby welcoming opinions from all sectors of the society.

Macao Orchestra presents concert “Azzolini and Lu Jia” in March Registration for master class opens from today
The Macao Orchestra (OM, from the Portuguese acronym), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents the concert “Azzolini and Lu Jia” on Friday, 15 March, at 8pm, at the St. Dominic’s Church. Admission is free. Tickets will be distributed at the St. Dominic’s Church one hour prior to the performance. In addition to the concert, OM will specially hold a master class on 13 March, in which bassoonist Azzolini will coach the participants on bassoon solo and woodwind ensemble performance skills in person. A number of seats will also be available for observers. All music aficionados are welcome.

Gross domestic product for the 4th quarter and the whole year of 2018
Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 2.1% year-on-year in real terms in the fourth quarter of 2018, slightly higher than the 1.9% increase in the third quarter. Economic growth in the fourth quarter was mainly driven by exports of services. External demand maintained growth; exports of services went up by 5.2% year-on-year, with exports of gaming services and other tourism services rising by 6.7% and 1.4% respectively; exports of goods increased by 10.2%. Domestic demand remained sluggish, with investment plunging by 14.3% year-on-year; meanwhile, private consumption expenditure, government final consumption expenditure and imports of goods showed respective growth of 2.8%, 3.4% and 2.3%.

Consumer Council conducted its ‘Supermarket price survey’ on 27 February for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Surveyed locations included 10 supermarkets in Taipa and Coloane Parish. Consumers may now check the report data on the Council’s website (www.consumer.gov.mo) or the “Supermarket Price Information Platform” app.
