Director-General of the European Commission’s Department for Interpretation visits MPI’s Chinese-Portuguese Machine Translation Laboratory

In order for Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) to strengthen its ten-year cooperation with the Council of the European Commission (EC), a delegation from the EC comprising Dr. Florika Fink-Hooijer, Director-General of the Department for Interpretation and Ms. Maria Preter, representative of the Director-General of the Department for Translation, visited the Institute on 9 October. The delegation paid a visit to MPI’s Chinese-Portuguese-English Machine Translation Laboratory as well as its Interpretation Laboratory. They received a warm welcome from MPI’s President Professor Lei Heong Iok among others. Dr. Hooijer commended on the sophisticated Chinese-Portuguese machine translation engine which has lent immense support to interpretation and translation tasks. She hopes to enhance academic cooperation with MPI to nurture more professional translators.


2nd International Film Festival & Awards‧Macao poised to unfold a New Avenue to the World of Films

The 2nd International Film Festival & Awards‧Macao (“IFFAM” or the “Film Festival”) will be staged from 8to 14 December. The Organizing Committee of IFFAM hosted a press conference today (3November). Director of Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and President of the IFFAM Organizing Committee Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes; Artistic Director of IFFAM Mike Goodridge; Executive Vice Presidents of the IFFAM Organizing Committee, namely, President of Macau Films & Television Productions and Culture Association (MFTPA), Alvin Chau, and President of Management Committee of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, José Tavares; Vice President of Cultural Affairs Bureau and Vice President of the IFFAM Organizing Committee, Chan Peng Fai; Talent Ambassador Donnie Yen; Festival Ambassador John Woo; among others attended the press conference. The Organizing Committee announced the dazzling lineup of international film stars and directors including internationally-reputed action star Donnie Yen and rising Korean movie star D.O. as Talent Ambassadors, and internationally-acclaimed film director John Woo as Festival Ambassador. The awe-inspiring event programme was also unveiled in the press conference.


Seminar on Mediation and Arbitration in Macao – Future Prospects

With the objective of fostering a culture of alternative dispute resolution and to promote an amicable settlement of disputes by encouraging the use of mediation and arbitration as a means to avoid the potentially lengthy and costly judicial proceedings, the Legal and Judicial Training Centre is going to organise a five-day seminar on “Mediation and Arbitration in Macao – Future Prospects” that is going to take place at the auditorium of the Civil Service Training Centre located on Alameda Dr. Carlos D’ Assumpção n.° 336-342, Cheng Feng Commercial Centre, 7th floor, on November 6th to 10th, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.


UM kicks off Innovation Week  2 MOUs signed to promote development of innovative industries in Macao

The University of Macau (UM) kicked off its first Innovation Week, in the UM Guest House today (1 November). Organised by UM’s Centre for Innovation, the event attracted prominent members of the community, industry representatives, experts, scholars, faculty members, students, and members of the general public. During the event, participants learned about the university’s latest developments in scientific research, commercialisation of research results, as well as knowledge and technological innovation. At the same event, UM signed memoranda of understanding with Zhuhai Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, and Newland, on the establishment of a parallel incubation centre and a joint laboratory for the development of smart cities, respectively. The documents aim to help Macao shift its economic focus from traditional industries to modern emerging industries and promote the development of the city’s creative industry.

Consumer Council released specific price survey results on 3 kinds of products

Consumer Council conducted its specific price survey on diapers, over-the-counter drugs, and milk powder on 1 November for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Result of the mentioned survey has been uploaded to the Council’s website (www.consumer.gov.mo), it is now available in the Council’s ‘Supermarket Price Information Platform’ iPhone and Android apps, and on the Council’s WeChat account page.


UM to hold Portuguese speech contest

The Department of Portuguese under the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) will hold the 15th Portuguese Speech Contest on 6 November. The event aims to stimulate students’ interest in learning Portuguese and enhance their language skills.


Transport and communications statistics for the 3rd quarter of 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that new registration of motor vehicles increased by 41.4% year-on-year to 4,572 in the third quarter of 2017, with that of heavy motorcycles (2,823) rising by 50.8%. New registration of motor vehicles in the first three quarters of 2017 went up by 17.4% year-on-year to 11,828, attributable to an increase of 1,701 heavy motorcycles (7,120). As at the end of September 2017, total number of licensed motor vehicles dropped by 3.0% year-on-year to 241,441, of which heavy motorcycles (95,964) and light automobiles (107,679) decreased by 3.2% and 3.0% respectively. There were 3,879 cases of traffic accidents in the third quarter of 2017 and number of victims totalled 1,288, up by 8.5% and 20.4% respectively year-on-year. In the first three quarters of 2017, number of traffic accidents rose slightly by 0.8% year-on-year to 11,087 cases, resulting in 3,547 casualties and 6 of them were killed.


IC announces candidates selected for the “2016 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films”

The second review of the “2016 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films”, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) was completed and a total of five entrants were selected as eligible candidates of the Programme. IC will grant each eligible candidate a subsidy of up to MOP240,000 for the production, promotion and marketing of the animation short films.
