UM graduates its first PhD in applied physics and materials engineering

Yao Lingmin from the University of Macau (UM) Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) recently became the first PhD student to graduate from the institute after passing her thesis defense with excellence. Soon after her graduation, she was appointed an assistant professor at Guangzhou University.


First painting and calligraphy works exhibition at Anim’Arte NAM VAN

Co-organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and the Macau Artist Society, “Purge one’s mind: Trio exhibition by Leong Kit Man, Im Hok Lon and Mok Hei Sai” will be inaugurated on Monday, 25 September, at 6pm, at the Lakeside Gallery - Room S1 in the Anim’Arte NAM VAN. It is the first painting and calligraphy works exhibition organized at Anim’Arte NAM VAN, featuring a total of 25 artworks by three young artists. The exhibition is open until 25 November. All are welcome to appreciate the painting and calligraphy works of the new generation of artists.


Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the Composite CPI in August 2017 increased by 1.36% year-on-year to 109.57, the highest year-on-year growth since January 2017. The increment in August was attributable to rising tuition fees, dearer prices of adults’ footwear and gasoline, as well as higher charges for eating out and outpatient services.


Recipient of UM Teaching Excellence Award to give talk on innovative teaching methods next Wednesday

The University of Macau (UM) on 27 September will hold the UM Teaching Excellence Award Seminar. Li Zihao, an assistant professor from the Faculty of Education and the first recipient of the UM Teaching Excellence Award, will be the keynote speaker. He will give a talk titled ‘Teaching in a Digital Era with Wicked Approaches’. During the talk, Li will share his insights on innovative teaching methods and discuss how to incorporate technology in the classroom. All are welcome.

Provision of free circulation coin exchange service to the public

In order to respond proactively to public views and to facilitate the circulation of currency coins, the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) will launch free coin exchange service (including the exchange of coins for banknotes and vice versa) to the public via the two Note-Issuing Banks – Bank of China Limited (BOC) and Banco Nacional Ultramarino, S.A. (BNU). This service will commence on 25th September, 2017 at the branches of the two Note-Issuing Banks (Please refer to the attachment for the address and telephone number of the Banks’ branches).


List of entrants for the second review of IC’s “2017 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Song Albums” announced

The initial review of the “2017 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Song Albums”, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), has been recently completed. The adjudicating panel selected 15 entrants for the second review. Each candidate eligible for the second review will be granted a subsidy up to a maximum amount of MOP220,000 to cover expenses of production, promotion and marketing of the original song albums.

31st Macao International Music Festival outdoor opera reinterprets a tragic love story from Greek mythology

The 31st Macao International Music Festival (MIMF), organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, will present an open-air new production of the opera Orfeo ed Euridice by young artists from Israel on Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 October, at 8pm, at Mount Fortress, reinterpreting a poignant and legendary love story from Greek mythology. On the other hand, internationally renowned ensemble The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen will bring a soul-stirring evening dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven on Friday, 20 October, at 8pm, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. Those interested should purchase tickets as soon as possible.
