External merchandise trade statistics for July 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for July 2017 amounted to MOP1.11 billion, up by 34.0% year-on-year; value of re-exports (MOP958 million) increased by 48.5%, with that of Garments (MOP195 million) surging by 393.1%; meanwhile, value of domestic exports (MOP156 million) slid by 16.2%, with that of Tobacco (MOP36 million) falling by 19.1%. Total merchandise import went up by 8.7% year-on-year to MOP6.15 billion, of which imports of Handbags & wallets and Gold jewellery expanded by 63.1% and 49.6% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in July amounted to MOP5.03 billion.


Government continues post-storm clean up and assistance

The post-typhoon recovery subsidy for small- and medium-sized enterprises will be increased from 30,000 patacas to 50,000 patacas, the Office of the Government Spokesperson announced yesterday afternoon in a press briefing giving updates on the Government’s post-storm clean-up and recovery efforts.


Progress of the post-typhoon works at the Cultural Affairs Bureau’s public libraries

The public libraries under the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) suffered different damage degrees due to typhoon “Hato”. Following a detailed inspection and a series of cleaning works, ten of the public libraries have resumed normal operations, namely: the Macao Central Library, Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, IACM Building Library, S. Lourenço Library, Ilha Verde Library, Mong Há Library, Wong Ieng Kuan Library in Areia Preta Urban Park, Wong Ieng Kuan Children’s Library in Areia Preta Urban Park, Taipa Library and Wong Ieng Kuan Library in Taipa. The Library in Ho Yin Garden will re-open to the public on 31 August.

UM scholar appointed as APA-IUPsyS GMHF to work with World Health Organisation

Dr Brian Hall, an assistant professor from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), University of Macau (UM), has been awarded the first APA-IUPsyS Global Mental Health Fellowship (GMHF) by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) for the 2017-2018 period. This is the first time the fellowship has ever been offered, and it was awarded to a University of Macau scholar. The fellowship will give Dr Hall the opportunity to work on key initiatives related to the Mental Health Action Plan of World Health Organisation (WHO).
