UM’s multidisciplinary research collaboration achieves breakthrough in precision cancer therapy, enabling drug screening results within 24 hours

A multidisciplinary research team from the University of Macau (UM) recently achieved a significant breakthrough in drug susceptibility test for cancer cell lines and human primary cancers by combining their expertise in precision medicine, microfluidic chip, and image processing. The screening method shortened the analysis process to within 24 hours, which was made possible by a cutting-edge, state-of-the-art technology developed in-house that merges biology and electronics, which laid a foundation for evidence-based drug susceptibility tests for precision cancer therapy. The work was recently published in the open access journal Scientific Reports under the Nature Publishing Group.

Consumer Council conducted its latest ‘Supermarket price survey’ in August on 22 August for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Surveyed locations included 12 supermarkets in Taipa and Coloane area.


Consumer Council conducts price survey on selling prices of fresh pork and vegetables from Zhuhai and Macao

For the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June, Consumer Council on 22 August collects prices of fresh pork from wet markets and supermarkets for consumers’ reference. The mentioned data collected during 16 August to 22 August are used for comparing the average selling price of the same products from Zhuhai. The relevant data has been uploaded to the Council’s website for consumers’ reference.

MPI welcomes over a hundred international students in the new academic year to encourage intercultural engagement and nurture international talents

Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) welcomed over a hundred international and exchange students in the 2017/2018 academic year. MPI’s commitment to have more international students on campus aligns with China’s ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, contributes to the realisation of Macao’s ‘One Centre, One Platform’ development goal and helps to foster an international experience. MPI’s international and exchange students this year come from countries including Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, France, the United States, Pakistan, Cambodia and also from several provinces in the Chinese Mainland. They will be studying in the Institute’s various bachelor’s programmes such as Chinese-Portuguese Translation, International Chinese Language Education, Computing, Public Administration, Gaming and Recreation Management, Nursing, Management, and Marketing. MPI hopes to foster the learning motivation of local students by encouraging intercultural engagement on campus.

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released survey results of Manpower Needs and Wages of the Gaming Sector for the second quarter of 2017. Survey coverage excludes junket promoters and junket associates.


First day of new semester, UM freshmen hope to surpass themselves

Today (21 August) is the first day of the new academic year at the University of Macau (UM). The various faculties, residential colleges, and administrative departments were busy welcoming old and new students. Some upperclassmen shared study tips with the freshmen and told them how to make the most of the resources on campus in order to know themselves and expand their networks. Many freshmen were very excited about the four years ahead, saying that they hope to work hard, learn from each other, and surpass themselves.

FSS Holds an Explanatory Session to Introduce Non-Mandatory Central Provident Fund System to Social Welfare Organizations

In order to let the community know more about the non-mandatory central provident fund system (the System), the Social Security Fund (abbreviated to FSS in Macao) has held its first explanatory session about the System at the convention hall of the Macao Science Center in order to explain the System to the government-funded social welfare organizations and the event attracted nearly 200 people.
