UM’s immersive English summer programme prepares incoming freshmen for English-medium education

The Summer English Immersion Programme 2017, organised by the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities, has ended. The programme was designed to prepare incoming freshmen for English-medium education at UM. Participating students went through a four-week intensive training in an immersive English environment, living and communicating with native speakers on a daily basis. Students described the programme as fun and helpful, saying that it boosted their confidence in speaking English and helped them adapt to university life.

UM scholar receives international young scholar award

Mario Cams, an assistant professor from the Department of History, Faculty of Social Science (FSS), University of Macau (UM), recently received the 2017 DHST Prize for Young Scholars from the Division of History of Science and Technology (DHST), International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST), for his outstanding academic performance and research in the history of science.


Ticket sales for the MIMF well-received on the first day of sales

The tickets for the 31st Macao International Music Festival (MIMF), organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), went on sale on 6 August (Sunday). A large number of people waited at different ticket offices to purchase tickets. Sales were well-received as over 5,000 tickets were sold on the first day of ticket sales, and the percentage of the ticket sales for most of the shows were more than 60%.

Consumer Council conducts price survey on selling prices of fresh pork and vegetables from Zhuhai and Macao

For the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June, Consumer Council collects prices of fresh pork and vegetables from wet markets and supermarkets for consumers’ reference.


Consumer Council conducted survey on application procedures of tutoring schools in new school year

The Consumer Council conducted a survey on the application and enrollment procedures of tutorial schools, one third of the surveyed schools are found to have no admission regulations information offered to consumers for a better understanding of the rights and responsibilities of both parties before enrollment. Tutorial schools are advised to establish detailed regulations for their operation to avoid any consumer dispute arises from verbal transaction.


Residential price index for the 2nd quarter of 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the overall residential price index in the second quarter of 2017 grew by 3.7% quarter-to-quarter to 253.0, marking five consecutive quarters of increase. The indices for the Macao Peninsula (253.7) and Taipa & Coloane (249.9) rose by 3.6% and 4.3% respectively. The index for existing residential units (259.6) went up by 4.4%, with the indices for the Macao Peninsula (246.7) and Taipa & Coloane (318.2) increasing by 4.5% and 4.0% respectively.


Registrations for the handicraft workshops (September) at the “Nam Van Lake Craft Market” are open

Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the “Nam Van Lake Craft Market” is held on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 January to 31 December 2017, from 2pm to 9pm, at the Anim’Arte NAM VAN, featuring a rich variety of handicraft workshops. Online registration for handicraft workshops in September is available at the Activity Registration System on IC’s website from today. The fee for each handicraft workshop is MOP50.


World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition award ceremony soon to be held in recognition of excellent translators worldwide

The award ceremony of the ‘World Chinese-Portuguese Translation Competition’ will be held at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 9 August. Jointly organised by the Tertiary Education Services Office (GAES) and Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), with the Language Big Data Alliance as the supporting unit, the competition aims to enhance the exchange of Chinese-Portuguese translation techniques between students of higher education institutions around the world, to train Chinese-Portuguese translation professionals, and to further promote the application of advances in Chinese-Portuguese translation teaching and research in Macao, the Chinese Mainland and the Lusophone countries according to the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. Academics and experts in the field of Portuguese teaching and research from Brazil, Portugal, the Chinese Mainland and Macao, as well as university students and teachers participating in this competition, will be present at the ceremomy.
