Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR Xue Xiaofeng visits MPI’s One Country Two Systems Research Centre to encourage innovative thinking and fruitful results

Mr. Xue Xiaofeng, Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government (CPG) in the Macao SAR and his delegation visited the One Country Two Systems Research Centre at Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) on 23 June 2017 for a meeting with its staff. The delegation received a warm welcome from Professor Im Sio Kei, Vice President of MPI and Dr. Leng Tiexun, Head of the research centre. Mr. Xue encouraged the centre’s research team to promote collaboration and innovative thinking, and to produce more fruitful research results in the future.


External merchandise trade statistics for May 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for May 2017 amounted to MOP894 million, up by 7.4% year-on-year; value of re-exports (MOP752 million) increased by 10.9%, with that of Travel goods, handbags & related products (MOP78 million) surging by 92.8%; however, value of domestic exports (MOP142 million) dropped by 7.9%, with that of Tobacco (MOP24 million) falling by 47.5%. Total merchandise import went up by 10.4% year-on-year to MOP5.84 billion, of which imports of Gold jewellery and Watches increased by 73.4% and 47.5% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP4.94 billion.


July is a Contribution Month and FSS Reminds Members of the Public to Pay Contributions on Time

The Social Security Fund (abbreviated to FSS in Macao) reminds members of the public that July is a contribution month and employers must pay in this month the contributions of the obligatory system for their local long-term employees for the second quarter of this year. If employers have hired a non-resident worker, they must also pay the employment fee. On the other hand, beneficiaries of the arbitrary system must also pay their contributions in July. Starting this year, the contribution amount is 90 patacas per month, of which the contribution amount for the obligatory system is 30 patacas for the employee and 60 patacas for the employer, and the contribution amount for the arbitrary system is 90 patacas.

Consumer Council conducted its latest ‘Supermarket price survey’ in June on 27 June for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Surveyed locations included supermarkets at Lam Mau, Patane and San Kio areas in Santo António Parish.


Consumer Council conducts price survey on selling prices of fresh pork and vegetables from Zhuhai and Macao

For the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June, Consumer Council on 27 June collects prices of fresh pork from wet markets and supermarkets for consumers’ reference. The mentioned data collected during 21 June to 27 June are used for comparing the average selling price of the same products from Zhuhai. The relevant data has been uploaded to the Council’s website for consumers’ reference.


Employment survey for March-May 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the general unemployment rate for March-May 2017 held stable as in the previous period (February-April), at 2.0%; the unemployment rate of local residents was 2.6%, down by 0.1 percentage point. Meanwhile, the underemployment rate was 0.4%, down by 0.1 percentage point.


Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey – 31 December 2016

According to the statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, investment of Macao residents (including individuals, the government and other legal entities, but excluding Macao’s foreign exchange reserves) in securities issued by unrelated non-residents reached MOP484.7 billion at current market value on 31 December 2016, an increase of 9.4% from 30 June 2016 and 10.5% year-on-year. Among various instruments of portfolio investment, equity securities (including mutual funds and investment trust units), long-term debt securities and short-term debt securities were valued at MOP183.9 billion, MOP285.9 billion and MOP14.9 billion respectively. As compared with end-2015, equity securities and long-term debt securities rose by 8.2% and 15.6% respectively, while short-term debt securities dropped by 30.4%.


UM-developed system to help visually impaired bus riders wins championship at IEEE international contest

A team from the University of Macau (UM) recently won the championship at the IEEE Mega-Challenge 2017: Smart Cities Competition, which was part of the IEEE RFID 2017 Conference, for their project ‘UHF RFID Based Gesture Control System for Smart City Transportation’. The system uses radio frequency identification to help visually impaired people communicate with the bus station via simple gesture control.
