Developing Macao as a smart city to optimise services to the public

The cooperation with Alibaba Group to further the Government’s efforts on the development of a smart city aims to boost social well-being and enhance the quality of the city’s services to the public, thus helping to make Macao a more liveable city.


“Conference Ambassadors” Develop their Charisma Guiding the development of Macao´s Convention and Exhibition Industry

Mr. Liu Chung Laung, a member of the Advisory Council of the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund, Mr. He Jintang, Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Mr. Li Ning, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Li Ning Company Limited recently received their certificates of appointment from Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac, to become Macao´s “Conference Ambassadors”. The said Ambassadors stated that, with the support from central government and the national strategy, together with Macao’s Mice’s software and hardware, they believe that it is possible to attract a larger number of international conferences to Macao, and that they will contribute the development of Macao’s convention and exhibitions industry, as well as the growth of various business sectors of Macao, so as to raise the “soft power” of Macao’s MICE Industry.


FSS Pays an Official Visit to the Association of Banks and Introduces the Non-Mandatory Central Provident Fund System

The Social Security Fund (abbreviated to FSS in Macao) recently paid an official visit to the Macau Association of Banks (the Association) and introduced to its representatives the Non-Mandatory Central Provident Fund System (the System) that will be implemented on 1 January next year. Though this meeting, the FSS expects to deepen the understanding of the Association about the new law. The Association expressed its willingness to cooperate actively with the FSS in order to promote the System to the bank employees.


UM’s science summer camp helps secondary school students cultivate interest in science

The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) recently held a closing ceremony for its Summer Camp 2017. This year’s summer camp attracted 140 students from 26 secondary schools in Macao. Some participants say that they have learned a lot of scientific knowledge that could be applied to their daily lives, adding that they hope to pursue further education in the same field.


OM 2017-2018 Concert Season opens with performance by the queen of the violin Kyung Wha Chung

The Macao Orchestra (OM, from the Portuguese acronym), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, kicks off its 2017-2018 Concert Season in September with the opening concert “Kyung Wha Chung and the Macao Orchestra”, to be held on 2 September (Saturday), at 8pm, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. Internationally renowned as the queen of the violin, South-Korean violinist Kyung Wha Chung joins hands with the OM to present a much-anticipated season opening concert. Tickets are on sale from today onwards at the Macau Ticketing Network, and an early bird 40% discount on tickets is available until 31 August, subject to certain criteria,.


IC announces candidates to the second review for the “2016 Support Programme for the Production of Feature Films”

The initial review for the “2016 Support Programme for the Production of Feature Films”, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), was completed and a total of ten entrants were selected to the second review of the Programme. The final beneficiaries will receive not only the financial support, but also one-to-one professional advice provided by veteran film professionals, for the production, marketing and promotion of the selected feature films.


UM research team receives Best Paper Award at radio wireless conference

A paper jointly written by Liu Nengwu, a student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM); Zhu Lei, head of the department; and Choi Wai Wa, an associate professor from the department, recently received the Best Paper Award at the Cross-Strait Quad-Regional Radio Wireless Conference (CSQRWC) 2017. Titled ‘Low-Profile Wide-Bandwidth Patch Antenna under Operation of TM0,1/2 and TM2,1/2 Modes’, the paper proposes a novel design concept to enhance the bandwidth of microstrip patch antennas (MPA).


Macao Polytechnic Institute Opening Ceremony for Academic Year 2017-2018 to be held on Friday

To celebrate the commencement of the new academic year the “Macao Polytechnic Institute Opening Ceremony for Academic Year 2017-2018” will be held in the MPI Pavilion on 18th August, 2017 (Friday) at 3:00 p.m.


UM scholar publishes first epidemiological study of depression among Chinese adults in Macao

Dr Brian Hall, assistant professor from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS), University of Macau (UM), and his Global and Community Mental Health Research Group, conducted the first population representative study of depression in Macao. The results showed that 8 per cent of Chinese adults are likely to bedepressed. Based on this estimate, over 30, 000Macao residents may be in need of mental health services. The prevalence of depression in Macao is higher than observed in published studies from neighboring Hong Kong and in mainland China.


Professor Huang Youyi, Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, Visits MPI Chinese-Portuguese Machine Translation Laboratory

To enhance cooperation and exchange, Professor Huang Youyi, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, together with Professor Zhong Weihe, Co-chair of Language Big Data Alliance, visited the Chinese-Portuguese Machine Translation Laboratory at Macao Polytechnic Institute on the 9th of August and was warmly welcomed by Professor Lei Heong Iok, President of MPI. Professor Huang spoke highly of the Laboratory's Chinese-Portuguese Machine Translation engine, the world's leading translation engine providing speech recognition and other technical services support for the development of the “One Belt and One Road” initiative and “Service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”. Professor Huang expressed his hope that the laboratory would speed up research and development and contribute to the Language Services Industry in Macao in the near future.
