Latest Monitoring of the Ambient Gamma Radiation in Macao (29 April 2011, 17:00)

According to the monitoring data of Gamma Radiation recorded for the past 24 hours (28th April 16:01 till 29th April 16:00) by the Taipa Grande Station of the Macao Meteorological Bureau, the Gamma-ray absorbed dose rate per minute ranges between 0.1169 and 0.1335μGy/h (micro Gray / hour) which is far more below the warning level of 0.35μGy/h. The Macao Meteorological Bureau will continue to pay close attention to the radiation level in Macao. If any abnormalities being discovered, we will release related message to the public immediately and inform relevant government departments to adopt relative contingency measures.


Transport and Communications Statistics for the 1st Quarter 2011

Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that the total number of licensed motor vehicles reached 197,800 at the end of March 2011, a year-on-year increase of 4%, of which 54% (106,823) were motorcycles and 39% (77,308) were light private cars. New registration of motor vehicles went up by 10% year-on-year to 4,332 in the first quarter of 2011, with motorcycles and light private cars accounting for 53% and 43% respectively. In the first quarter of 2011, number of traffic accidents rose by 8% year-on-year to 3,377 cases, resulting in 1,251 victims and 3 of them were killed. Cross-border vehicle traffic by land between Macao and Mainland China increased by 9% year-on-year to 978,108 vehicle trips in the first quarter of 2011, of which vehicle traffic through the Border Gate took up 82%. Commercial flight movements at the Macao International Airport decreased by 5% year-on-year to 8,545 in the first quarter of 2011. The major routes were Taiwan, China (34% of total); Mainland China (30%); Thailand (9%) and Malaysia (7%). Helicopter flights between Macao and Hong Kong (3,944) and between Macao and Mainland China (950) increased by 11% and 20% respectively. Passenger transport by sea between Macao and Hong Kong totalled 30,746 ferry trips in the first quarter of 2011, up by 9% year-on-year. Ferry trips between Macao and Mainland China totalled 5,925, down by 8% year-on-year. In the first quarter of 2011, seaborne container throughput totalled 23,161 TEU or 17,140 containers handled, up by 15% and 20% respectively year-on-year. Gross weight of seaborne containerized cargo decreased by 5% year-on-year to 38,382 tonnes, with 849 tonnes of transshipment goods. Gross weight of containerized cargo by land decreased by 6% to 9,282 tonnes, including 2,522 tonnes of transit goods. In the first quarter of 2011, outward air cargo (5,052 tonnes) and inward air cargo (2,492 tonnes) decreased significantly by 33% and 39% respectively; meanwhile, transit air cargo dropped by 40% year-on-year to 976 tonnes. At the end of March 2011, number of mobile telephone users rose by 17% from a year earlier to 1,231,912 whereas fixed-line telephone users decreased by 2% to 167,804. As regards internet services, number of subscribers reached 180,316 and the cumulative duration of usage totalled 118 million hours in the first quarter of 2011, up by 20% and 22% respectively.


External Merchandise Trade Statistics for March 2011

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the value of total merchandise export for March 2011 amounted to MOP613 million, down by 18.6% year-on-year, of which value of re-exports decreased by 26.1% to MOP410 million, but that of domestic exports increased by 2.1% to MOP203 million. Value of exports of Knitted or crocheted garment decreased by 33.5% year-on-year, while that of Textile fabrics rose substantially by 106.3%. Value of total merchandise import amounted to MOP4.80 billion in March 2011, up by 38.7% year-on-year. Value of imports of Capital goods surged by 74.7%, of which imports of Mobile phones soared continuously by 118.8%. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP4.18 billion in March 2011. In the first quarter of 2011, total value of merchandise export decreased by 10.8% year-on-year to MOP1.63 billion, of which value of re-exports declined by 15.9%, but that of domestic exports rose slightly by 0.7%; meanwhile, total value of merchandise import rose by 34.2% to MOP13.19 billion. Merchandise trade deficit for the first quarter of 2011 widened by 44.4% to MOP11.56 billion; the exports/imports ratio dropped by 6.2 percentage points year-on-year to 12.3%. Value of merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP734 million), Mainland China (MOP232 million) and the USA (MOP153 million) in the first quarter of 2011 decreased by 12.3%, 13.4% and 26.4% respectively year-on-year; however, exports to the EU (MOP98 million) increased by 2.7%. Exports of Jewellery (MOP114 million) decreased by 61.4%, but that of Tobacco & wine (MOP139 million) and Clocks & watches (MOP98 million) grew by 62.8% and 45.6% respectively; meanwhile, exports of Textile & garment declined by 11.5% to MOP337 million. In the first quarter of 2011, value of merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP3.86 billion) and the EU (MOP3.40 billion) expanded by 29.2% and 55.9% respectively year-on-year. Imports of Consumer goods soared by 36.5% to MOP8.08 billion, of which imports of Food & beverages (MOP1.98 billion), Gold jewellery (MOP1.07 billion) and Handbags & wallets (MOP682 million) increased by 34.0%, 35.9% and 98.6% respectively. Moreover, imports of Capital goods (MOP2.43 billion) registered year-on-year increase of 70.6%. In the first quarter of 2011, total value of merchandise import and export amounted to MOP14.82 billion, up by 27.2% compared with MOP11.65 billion from a year earlier.

Macao Museum launches range of Activities to Celebrate International Museum Day

International Museum Day is celebrated on 18th May every year. This year, on Wednesday 18th May - the Macao Museum of the Cultural Affairs Bureau and its affliated gallery Tak Seng On Pawnshop will open to the public for free. In addition to two sessions of free guided tours (11:00am - Mandarin; 3:00pm - Cantonese), the Macao Museum will organise two activities including the game 'Know More about Chinese Characters' plus demonstrations of 'gilding and colouring wooden carved religious figures' on the same day in order to promote the traditional handicrafts of China's intangible cultural heritage, thus raising public awareness about protecting local intangible cultural heritage. The two activities are scheduled from 11:00am to 1:00pm and from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, respectively. Residents and tourists are welcome to experience the rare opportunity of observing traditional handicraft demonstrations and participating in the games. On Sunday 8th May 2011, the Macao Museum will jointly organise the Macao International Museum Day Fair 2011 at Tap Seac Square with other museums in Macao. Featuring exhibitions, performances, workshops and games, the Fair seeks to strengthen communication between the public and the museums, showcasing the cultural, historical and educational functions of the museums and the characteristics of different museums. The Fair will also attract a number of museums from Guangdong and Hong Kong to participate. In response to this year's theme of Museum and Memory, the Macao Museum will host Macao's National Intangible Cultural Heritage - Gilding and Colouring Wooden Carved Religious Figures Workshop for Parents and Children at the Fair from 3:00pm to 6:30pm. The Workshop comprises seven sessions, with half an hour and 20 members per session. Following the workshop, participants may take home their finished or semi-finished carved genuine gold foil tags featuring the 12 Chinese zodiac signs as souvenirs. Parents are welcome to participate in the workshop with their children. Registration in advance is required, and seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Results of the Employment Survey for January – March 2011

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the unemployment rate for January-March 2011 was 2.7% and the underemployment rate was 1.4%, down by 0.1 and 0.2 percentage point respectively over the previous period (December 2010 - February 2011). Total labour force was 334,000 in January-March 2011 and the labour force participation rate stood at 71.5%, with the employed population increasing by about 800 over the previous period to 325,000. Analyzed by industry, employment of Restaurants & Similar Activities saw increase, while that of Recreational, Cultural, Gaming & Other Services and the Transport, Storage & Communications Sector registered a decrease. Number of the unemployed decreased slightly by 300 from the previous period to 8,900, with 6.5% being fresh labour force entrants searching for their first job, up by 1.4 percentage points over the previous period. In comparison with January-March 2010, the unemployment rate and the underemployment rate dropped by 0.2 and 0.4 percentage point respectively; meanwhile, the labour force participation rate rose by 0.4 percentage point. In the first quarter of 2011, the unemployment rate of local residents held stable at 3.3%, same as the fourth quarter of 2010; the labour force participation rate of local residents dropped by 0.1 percentage point to 66.8%.
