IFTM students explore the possible applications of the metaverse in the hotel industry

IFTM students from the Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management collaborated with a Macao-based consortium of high-tech organisations called Sustaincia.org to develop concepts for the application of the metaverse in the hotel industry. Dr. Fernando Lourenço, the facilitator of the Entrepreneurship course, guided students to find examples of the use of metaverse or equivalent technologies in the hospitality sector from around the world to obtain best practices and understand the present status of the technology.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC-Sparkling Broadway classic returns to Macao this Summer

The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from its Portuguese acronym) will present 16 performances of the musical The Sound of Music, an international tour produced by Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, set to take residency at Macao Cultural Centre’s Grand Auditorium for two weeks, from 10 to 22 August.


IFTM students conduct research on effectiveness of smart tourism technologies in the Ruins of St. Paul

IFTM students from the Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management programme engaged in a project related to a virtual reality exhibition called “Visiting the Ruins of St. Paul’s in Space and Time” which is organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR.



IFTM Students join the local traditional folk custom as volunteers

Students of the Bachelor of Science in Cultural and Heritage Management programme at the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) recently participated in the local intangible cultural heritage festival, the Macao Festival of the Drunken Dragon, to experience and learn the atmosphere and values of the traditional festival as volunteers.


Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for May 2023

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 130 hotel establishments offered accommodation services to the public in May 2023, an increase of 9 year-on-year. Total number of available guest rooms grew by 10.0% to 43,000. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms in May rose by 44.6 percentage points year-on-year to 78.9%; the rates for 3-star (81.0%) and 5-star hotels (79.0%) were relatively high, which showed respective growth of 37.4 percentage points and 47.6 percentage points.


Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey – 31 December 2022

According to the statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, on 31 December 2022, investment of Macao residents (including individuals, the government and other legal entities but excluding Macao’s foreign exchange reserves) in securities issued by unrelated non-residents reached MOP1,024.6 billion at current market value, representing a rise of 1.8% from end-June 2022 or a fall of 6.7% from end-2021. Among the various instruments of portfolio investment, equity securities (including mutual funds and investment trust units), long-term debt securities and short-term debt securities were valued at MOP338.9 billion, MOP595.5 billion and MOP90.2 billion respectively. As compared with a year ago, the market values of equity securities and long-term debt securities decreased by 12.9% and 8.0% respectively whereas short-term debt securities increased by 46.6%.
