Unlawful seizure of aircraft exercise was deemed a success

Macau International Airport carried out the Exercise on the Unlawful Seizure of Aircraft at 02:30 this morning, simulating the scenario of a foreign registered aircraft destined to Macao being unlawfully seized by a foreign armed political group. The hijackers demanded the Macao SAR Government to release their group leader who was imprisoned in Macao, pay the ransom and allowed the aircraft to fly back to the point of origin. The hijackers also threatened to kill the passengers and crew members held captive on board.


【Foster high-quality tourism development】“Quality Retail Services” Seminar Series 2024 begins

Jointly organized by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Consumer Council and Sands China, the “Quality Retail Services” Seminar Series 2024 (the “Seminar Series”) begins today (26 June), which consists of four themed seminars to be held successively from this month through the second half of this year. Tailored for Certified Shops and employees in the retail and tourism-related sectors, the Seminar Series is held to upgrade retail and tourism service quality, enhance satisfaction among local and visiting shoppers, in turn fostering quality tourism development and reinforcing Macao’s status as a world centre of tourism and leisure.




Cultural Affairs Bureau calls for proposals for Performing Arts Productions 2024 – 2026

In order to promote the development of Macao into a “City of Performing Arts”, create performance opportunities for local performing arts industries, highlight Macao’s role as the “One Base” platform for cultural exchanges, and enhance the image of a “Cultural Macao”, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from its Portuguese acronym) is calling for the proposals for local commissioned productions, supporting stage works with potential to premiere in the next two years. With this project, IC aims to promote the production of outstanding artistic works in Macao and foster the development of local performing arts. The submission deadline for proposals is 8 September 2024.


Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey – 31 December 2023

According to the statistics released today (26 June) by the Monetary Authority of Macao, on 31 December 2023, investment of Macao residents (including individuals, the government and other legal entities but excluding Macao’s foreign exchange reserves) in securities issued by unrelated non-residents reached MOP1,104.5 billion at current market value, representing a rise of 3.0% and 9.7% when compared with end-June 2023 and end-2022 respectively. Among the various instruments of portfolio investment, equity securities (including mutual funds and investment trust units), long-term debt securities and short-term debt securities were valued at MOP335.3 billion, MOP693.8 billion and MOP75.5 billion respectively. As compared with a year ago, the market values of equity securities and long-term debt securities increased by 4.4% and 16.5% whereas that of short-term debt securities decreased by 16.4%.


Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for May 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that inbound package tour visitors leapt by 187.3% year-on-year to 242,000 in May 2024, with those from mainland China soaring by 173.0% to 219,000. International tour visitors jumped by 522.2% to 18,000, with those coming from the Republic of Korea (7,000) and India (4,000) surging by 620.7% and 1,662.4% respectively.


Lai Chi Vun Shipyards – Plots X11-X15 temporarily closed for enhancement works from 1 July

In order to facilitate the requalification and utilisation of historical and cultural resources and enable the conversion of historic districts into new diversified cultural tourism attractions, the relevant Macao SAR Government services are collaborating with some of the biggest local tourism and recreational companies in order to promote the revitalisation of some of the city’s historic districts. In this context, in reference to the revitalisation plan for Lai Chi Vun Shipyards, the Galaxy Entertainment Group will be developing the first phase of enhancement works at the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards – Plots X11-X15, from 1 July. In order to ensure public safety and enable the execution of the referred necessary works, the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards – Plots X11-X15 will be temporarily closed to the public from the indicated date onwards. Guided tours and shuttle bus services will also be suspended during the mentioned period of works. The project is expected to be completed in December of the current year.



DSEDJ holds World School Basketball Championship 2024—Sharing and Exchange Session for Youth and Students in Celebration of Macao’s Return to the Motherland

The World School Basketball Championship 2024 (“WSC Basketball”), organised by the International School Sport Federation (ISF) and hosted by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, is currently taking place in Macao. This year marks the double celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland. It is particularly significant for Macao SAR to be the host of this world-class school basketball tournament in the name of Macao, China. To this end, the Education and Youth Development Bureau has held a sharing and exchange session for youth and students to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland during the championship. In the event, the DSEDJ invited Mr Du Feng, main coach and former member of the China Men’s National Basketball Team, Secretary of Guangdong Basketball and Volleyball Management Centre, main coach of Guangdong Southern Tigers, as well as Mr Zhou Qi, member of the China Men’s National Basketball Team and member of Guangdong Southern Tigers to share, exchange and have basketball training practices with more than 400 teachers and students. The sharing session aimed at letting students understand the development achievements of our nation and Macao in rich and diverse forms, and pass on the spirit of patriotism and love for the country and for Macao.
